Project

Qantas Centre of Excellence

Overview

The Qantas Centre of Excellence was the consolidation of dispersed work centres within one facility through the refurbishment of the facilities known as Building 147 and 189 at the Qantas Jet Base for occupation by Rolls Royce Engine Maintenance.

blueVisions’ Role

  • Value added project management services including managing all stages of the project lifecycle
  • Serving as the Superintendent’s representative to manage the Contracts
  • Mitigating the significant risks of latent conditions associated with work inside the existing buildings from the 1960’s which was done by developing a Procurement Strategy that advocated the use of the Managing Contractor form of contracting, enabling the works classified as “exempt” by the Airport Building Controller to commence early with various trades being brought in as required. The Cost Plan was structured to enable the completion of the maximum number of items of work by ranking them high, medium and low within the budget.

Challenges

  • Major risk of latent conditions associated with work inside the existing buildings from the 1960’s including potential ground contamination inside engine pits, asbestos inside the existing building and fire safety issues
  • Risk of working within an operational industrial facility
  • Scope creep associated with major variations driven by the end-users
  • Complex staging plan on account of various dependencies between work elements.

Outcomes

Successful completion of this $3.6m project to time and budget with the satisfaction of all stakeholders.
